DescriptionThe concept of “Understatement| is considered in the article from the angle of an associative approach. The author analyses the associative connections of the word “Understatement”, which allows figuring out a specific inner structure of the meaning, a deep system of interconnections, underlying native speakers’ cognitive picture of the world. The ethno-cultural peculiarities of the concept of “Understatement” in the English language are emphasized by means of mapping the corresponding lexical groups, comparing value judgments and set expressions, based on behavioral stereotypes. While analyzing the concept sphere of “Understatement” the author underlines the representativeness and relevance of the studied concept, which reveals the most important characteristics of the Anglo Saxon society, as well as its connection with some mental and language categories
